2 week pet

They are selling these at our local market for 5 YTL. I am so tempted to purchase and then set the duckling free before we leave. Anyone know what to feed them?

  1. I might be wrong about this, but I have always been told that once they are kept by humans (and fed by them), they will not survive if they are then released back into the wild.....they won't know how to find food for themselves and other ducks that were NOT with humans won't accept them and will ostracize them and even become aggressive towards them.

  2. Good to know. Maybe we will find another means of , "setting it free" -- maybe a return to the store or the bird farm across the street...we will see. (there really is a bird farm right across the street from the school)

  3. The baby chicks just hatched at Kira's school. I can totally see the appeal. But then I think about bird/duck poop and I get a little hesitant. Although my kids poop everywhere and I keep them. Maybe I should be more open minded?

My mom had a pet duck though, and she said she fed him mash. And the only other thing I remember is that they eat by biting the food and then swallowing it with water. Without the water present I think they can choke to death.

  4. And do you have feed stores by you? I think you can buy pellet food for them. I've seen it at the feed store near us, but obviously, that won't help you!

Oh, and NO BREAD! Ingesting mold kills ducks! So NEVER FEED THEM BREAD!
